Poker After Dark

Postby thejim » Wed Jan 03, 2007 12:49 am

Anyone else watching? I watched last night and was underwhelmed. So, I thought I'd lose some more sleep tonight.

I missed the first episode but i watched it tonight... and i'm a little confused as to what it is. A cash game/tourney? Where u buy in the 20k put the cash on the table but you can't cash out? If so whats the point in the wads of cash since it's not a true cash game.

From what I understand, it's basically a one-table tournament. $20k freezeout, winner-take-all. One tourney a week, with a recap show on the weekend at some point, and a different lineup each week. They start with 20k in chips, but apparently some of that is in "cash", because it looks cool. Seems a little dumb, but whatever. The second show was better than the first. I actually liked it, but it still has problems, the main one for me being that they talk over each other too much, and you don't really hear anyone sometimes. It seems like a cross between High Stakes Poker, which I have liked, and Poker Superstars, which I haven't.

Hey Jim, TiVo baby! No need to lose sleep.

I liked the first one, although I do see how people not skilled in multi-conversation following would be annoyed by all the over-talk. Its definately an art. At one point, I had to mute everything because I my brain couldn't ignore all the talk and I was trying to focus on some Gus Hansen tells...if I could find them.

Not explaining the concept was a little annoying, I had no idea what was goin gon other than playing poker. I found it humorous they were talking about the TV Blackjack junk.

i, too, am underwhelmed. i think the high stakes mixed with superstars is a good comparison.

from what i understand, the players have been asked/told to yuck it up, which would explain all of the overtalking.

this is not the same shana hiatt we grew to love, it's like she's caked in makeup. and when she does talk, it's awkward. she's standing two feet behind the players talking about them, and they're sitting at the table just talking away themselves... as if she's not even there.

i know the buy-in is $20k, but is that the starting chip amount? was that made clear?

and yes, this show is a DVR must. i'm not staying up to watch this every night.

I know it's great, but I'm resisting the DVR now. I think I might become compelled to watch too much TV.

I won't say I am compelled to watch too much TV, but I do find myself more TV organized and I spend my time more wisely....however, when I see poker shows building up on the Tivo, or other stuff I like, I do get trapped into "trying to get caught up".... Its nice to have stuff to watch whenever you want though.

I actually watch less other TV, never watch the news anymore and virtually never try random new shows since I am never caught up.

This IMO is the only downside to a DVR. The only time i even find out new shows exist is when someone else mentions them. You then have to decide if its worth watching midway through a season. The good thing is if you do you will get caught up at some point because they all replay the episodes. You may just see them out of order.

I can't imaging life without a DVR.

Another benefit of a DVR is getting to keep pay per view porn for later viewing.

I currently have the following movies saved on mine:

Night at the Bordello
Naughty Amateur MILFs ( I love MILFs, my wife is a MILF)
Forrest Hump
Shaving Ryan's Privates
Something happened in a Rest Stop On The Way To Galveston (refer to my old posts to get the joke)
Chicks With Dicks (this was mistakenly ordered, I swear it)
