Tommy, that new article is kickass! Thanks for letting someone speak their mind, even if it is a rebuttal for you.

By the way, I'm sure whoever wrote it doesn't mind the change you made. If he does, I'll kick his ass. No matter how big and bad he thinks he is!

I am gonna have to agree with Big Pappy on this one.

In a live casino you would never do those things like you do online period. I would like to see online poker become more like that as far as the verbal abuse goes.

Case in point I had QTh and the flop came hhT. I bet some dude came over the top. I figured I had top pair good kicker plus a flush draw. There was no preflop action....So I reraised him by going all in. Well he called he had KTo I hit the flush on the turn which basically crippled him. Was this a bad beat, maybe..But did I deserve to get yelled at for the next 5 min until I finished him off in anothe hand. I dont think so but because he didnt see me or wasnt near me he thought he could verbally abuse me. Had that been live he would have said nice hand and went about his buisness because popping off to me (I am a rather large guy) might force me to take some action.

In live poker you would never call someone a cocksucker at the top of your lungs....and you would never call someone down with T2. Its just not gonna happend.

Here is my best metaphore for online poker....

Being online is like drinking a 6 or 12 pack (depending on body mass) and walking up to that hot hot hot girl you would never appoach while sober.
Its liquid courage at its finest. Think about it...

Are you gonna chase down a set with T2s after a 10k buy-in with espn filming the entire thing......I some how doubt it.

However online anyone will chase it.........So you have to be prepared for it......Take it when it happens to you cause you will do it to others.

ok so what if no one might cuss someone out in a live game ...
but the frustration and anger that they have is very apparent to everyone at the table... especially the person that lucked out ... and that right there is an aspect of the live game ...

but i cant very well see what someone looks like through the internet... and they know that also ... so in order to vent their frustraions ... instead of sitting there with a scowl on their face they type in you mother fucker blah blah... they type that in to represent the scowl that no one can see ... .

thus i go back to my original statement that it takes away form the ability of the online game to be mroe like the live game...

its one thing to sit there and make a face at me. Its another to verbally abuse me for making what in you opinion is a bad call or even if I knew I was making a bad call and wanted to call anyways.

Me giving you a bad beat no matter how small does not justify you calling me a mother fooker, sending harassing chats while I am playing. Take your beating and go. It happens to them the best of them.

Now if your talking about saying stuff like nice catch or how could u have called that and then leaving the table well thats different. Just like in a casino if I bust you out of a tournament you cant stay at the table giving me crap forEVER. You can say a few words then leave. Casino's will throw you out and even ban you for some of the behavior that goes on online. So for me its the same deal with turning off observer chat.

I will however agree that maybe a 20 sec delay needs to be in there so you can congradulate the guy on a magnificent play.

the point is you should act just like you would if I was there. Unfortuneatly they cant do that online, so its an all or nothing thing. (Well they can put on filters but its much easier to not let them speak).

Oh and I would like to add that during live play if you exhibit that kind of behavior you will start getting people to call because well they can and really because your being an ahole.

you really are missing my point ...
i dont think it is "right" for people to berate people never said it was... but it does add a human element to the game... denying that by logic makes it less human.

well hello you cant make a face at someone online... they cant see you sitting there in your boxers eating a slice of pizza and jerking off to the latest porn video... but they can see what you type in the chat box ... and more importanly peoples games can be affected by what is typed in the box ....
weather it be nice catch or you are a cocksucker it is still human input that you can later make judgment calls off of ...

i myself will rage or berate people for no reason.. why to throw them off their game... or to get them to come after me ...

often at the beginning of an online game someone will say good luck all ... i will respond with go fuck yourselves everyone...

somepeople will "lol" and those people i immediately know that i am fucking with everyone and i can label then as laid back and not going to be easily influenced by one thing or the other... others that take offense to it i can label as easily manipulated... and you can sometimes take advantage of it ...

i guess i give up explaining it to yall though... if you dont think that the smack talk etc adds an element to the game then that is your opinion and maybe you are right and I am wrong , i personally think that it does add an element to the game , and yall being upset by people berating you or someone else is proof of my concept....

Would you say "go fuck yourselves." at the beginning of playing at some poker room in person? If no then how is it the same?

When I read your article I got the impression that on-line chat is what made the game feel like a real game, but the actions you use on online chatting is not anything like a real game. You use it to verbally abuse someone (it’s hard to think of another phrase, so use that term liberally). That’s where separation comes in. I can see your point about seeing someone frustration on one's face (being in a live game), but your going to lose the ability to see that because plain and simple it's online. Human emotion is lost over a computer. You can never get that via a computer. You can try. Hell you've seen it with people posting, someone types something and someone takes it the wrong way. You get misunderstanding when any conversation occurs over the web with live interaction. And that's why I think party poker disabled the chat. It's irrelevant on online play.

Well, this is one of the most emotional responses I have seen to an article.

I know where Tom is coming from. I know what he means and what he is getting at. I feel for him, I just can't quite reach him, if you know what I mean.

I get pretty comfortable playing online. So I’ll apologize to the table for taking too long for a decision. Then explain that the voices in my head were all screaming like the audience on "The Price is Right"! I couldn't make one out in particular. So I had to make a decision for myself. I can see laughing at Tom telling everyone to F-Off at the beginning of a SNG. I have told people to keep my chips warm after they smack me upside the head with their hand. I joke about people chasing and calling all sorts of bets with pocket 2s to the river after an AKQ suited flop. In that sense, I know where Tom is coming from. I also know that Tom isn't some little piss ant trying to use his anonymity to talk big. Those are the guys I hate. Some of the people I referred to as Weasels may be the same as Tom. However, I normally wait for someone to pick a fight before I start breaking out the asterisk, if you know what I mean. Besides, who the hell would actual want to play poker at the same table as Mike “The Mouth” Matusow?

Sore losers suck! They whip me to no end. We all talk about playing unpredictably; then everyone gets pissed when they get a bad beat. The guy with 2s is trying to act like he has more than he has. If he catches a third 2 on the river, then his strategy worked. I don’t know anyone that says, “Man, I just want to play as predictable as possible!”

I remember one thing everynight that I play poker:
UNLESS YOU FLOP A ROYAL FLUSH, YOUR HAND IS BEATABLE!

Well, two things if you include:
NO MATTER HOW MANY LOADS OF LAUNDRY MY WIFE DOES, I STILL HAVE TO MAKE SURE I HAVE UNDERWEAR FOR THE MORNING!
HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU DO 7 LOADS OF LAUNDRY ON A SUNDAY EVENING AND NOT, EVEN BY ACCIDENT, WASH A SINGLE PAIR OF MY FUCKING UNDERWEAR?
