Bush signed into law a new position that will appoint stricter penalties to people pirating intellectual property. In addition, they are going to create a position for an IP "czar" that will report directly to the President on these matters.

Exactly. If they could actually have an impact on it, it would have already happened.
In related news, I'm closing in on 6,000 MP3s downloaded. Great success! |

Still all sitting in a box by my computer at home. The CueCat method of scanning the barcodes to get the titles listed was pretty much a failure. I'm going to have to bring the box to the next event and setup a kiosk to see if anybody wants to take them off my hands for a dollar each and/or ridicule my musical tastes. |

I had to sue those guys (Cue Cat company...Digital something another) because they interviewed 2 people from me, and then tried to hire them behind my back. Got my money when I realized this 9 months later! |

In my eyes, outside of the guys who sell shit at swap meets, the majority of large-scale "commercial" piracy happens overseas and then the products are distributed in the U.S. I'm pretty sure Bush doesn't have much jurisdiction to pass laws that effect those guys.
I'm not talking about MP3's - I'm talking about counterfeit CD's and DVD's that come in from Hong Kong, Singapore, etc. I've bought a few DVD's on eBay that appeared to be legit, only to have a package show up from Asia with a counterfeit product. The vast majority of U.S. consumers are too stupid to find and download the underground stuff and the newsgroup stuff. It would seem that the majority of the losses come from the people that buy illegal "hard copies" of copyrighted material.
If this is indeed the case, this is just a different form of the decades-long war on drugs from foreign countries. Good luck with all that. |

My question here is why the US taxpayer is forced to prop up the fight agaisnt piracy when corporations have legal actions that they can take.

Because all politicians, including the Legislature and the President, have to do what their corporate sponsors want. |

All hope is lost. I'm investing in guns and ammo. And in bars for you pussies that will go get drunk because you're too weak to pick up a gun. |
