so i have been grinding it out at the 1-2games...
making $12-15 an hour....for the last couple months...

it made me think that i dont think i could make a living at 1-2 and that it would take something like 5-10nl or 10-20nl to make a good/decent living

and i am saying a good/decent living would be anywhere from 80-120k a year...the question is are there really any big games like that widely availible even in vegas ? running enough of the time that one could make a living?

i guess i am justt looking at this mountain i am trying to climb and realizing that its bigger than i thought.

i need to make a correction ... the most i figure I could make playing 1-2nl in a year would be 30-50k...looking more like 30k...i guess my point is that i thought at one point that i could make 60-90k playing 2-5... but i dont think its possible....and that something like 5-10nl or 10-20nl would be needed...

and your question is whether or not there are 5-10nl games in vegas widely available?

i would think that at least 3-4 casino's have a 5-10 game going at all times

not sure though

i would think the 2/5 would be pretty easy to find. a 5/10 would probably be available somewhere regularly. but i would think that the level of competition would be considerable higher. you'll still have a few guys that a loaded that just want to play, but i would assume there would be a lot less dead money at those levels.

also consider that you won't have to pay taxes on you cash game net. that alone is like getting a 30% higher salary.

considering making a run at vegas?

At 5-10 and 10-20, there would certainly be the POTENTIAL to make more, but the play will be MUCH better. The best players naturally gravitate to the highest limits. When you get up to 10-20 and above, you'll find that in most games you have mostly sharks that pass money back and forth while they wait for a fish/tourist or two to come along with some dead money.

Just resign yourself to playing poker as a part-time second job. That way you won't totally hate it six months from now.

ya I dont see myself playing professional full time any time soon if at all... but i did see myself making more than i am currently making... and i thought that playing 2-5 as a part time gig i could make enough that i wouldnt have to worry about rushing to find another job if i ever got laid off ...i would look for another job but wouldnt be in panic mode...

but i dont see that as the case... as I think with my style and earning potential at the table that it would be a significantly lower hourly wage than what i am used to in the real world.

I have gone through phases in my poker life when i have played tremendous amounts of poker, even when i am "taking a break" from poker I am playing more than most. so i dont think i will get sick of it any time soon... i just wish i was making alot more than i currently am... guess its just greed...

I have never considered full time poker, but I think there might be something
I would call a "reasonable expectation" as far as how much can be made
on a regular basis. *I* certainly don't know what that number is.
You said $15-$20 / hr is not enough for TTT. I'm guessing you're looking to
make at least twice that. Do you know anyone making $30-$40 / hr on a
consistent basis right now? If so, what limits are they playing & where?
Is $20 / hr the most you can reasonably expect to make on a regular basis
on a 1-2 game?
No answers here, just questions.

i dont know anyone making 30-40 an hour playing poker... i know people that like to think they were. and tell themselves they are but i dont know anyone making that much for real and verified.

i would guess that some are capable of making $20 an hour at 1-2. i would guess that playing 2-5 would theoretically jump this to $40 an hour however i think the competition is tougher thus... more like $30 an hour. for me to play full time and NOT look for a job i would need to be pulling in 40-50 an hour.

I dont really have all the answers either but I guess i will find out as this thing progresses.

I would think Limit poker would be the best bet to earn the 20-40 dollar mark hourly.
10/20 should do it I would think

2.5 years ago I was making ~$30/hour playing sngs for about 1 1/2 mos. Then reality happened and I started losing and haven't been up since.

I thought I really sucked until my 10th place finish at the KI 2 years ago and then my 6th place finish at the Venetian.

Now I suck again.

Another post that added no value to the thread. Sorry.

The having added no value. Since this thread had little value, any contribution adds value.

TTT I think you should quit your job, sell your truck, sell your house, sell your dog, sell your Roger Clemens baseball, go to Vegas and make a run at it. You only live once baby! The support structure is already in place (Jim/Heather/Rebel on the ground in Vegas, and your Weston crew online).

Fuck it you can always come back to the Dallas area as an older, beaten down, out of work guy later.....but don't think about that part

i have the 10cent/25cent doldrums. I play a monthly $20 max buyin NL game where my average hourly gain is about $5.00. Its tough, factoring in the huge swings, the highs and lows. Hell even some pros can't handle the swings.

I would need to bring in $6 hour to consider not looking for a part-time second job.
